Tribute to Bill Goebel - National Parks Association of Queensland

Sadly NPAQ life member William Goebel, passed away on the 2nd December 2015 at age 93. Bill has contributed enormously towards the conservation of the protected area that is now known as Girraween National Park. This area that now incorporates the Goebel property had been his backyard since the age of nine when his family purchased land for farming in 1931. Bill’s intimate knowledge of the plants, flora, fauna, along with an ability to interpret and share that knowledge has been instrumental in convincing many a visitor or surveyor that these areas should be protected. Anyone who has had more than a passing visit to Girraween would be aware of the connection Bill had with the park. You may have been a happy camper that was treated to a slideshow of all things Girraween, featuring much of his photography, (another of his passions) or led on a park walk by him. He had been involved with the park either voluntarily or as a paid Ranger, for most of his adult life. If not physically of late, he had still been donating cameras and equipment for Wombat surveys and other projects. He received an Excellence Award in 2007 from the EPA for Volunteering.
“I was pretty happy to get EPA’s 2007 Excellence Award for Volunteering last year. Working there wasn’t just a job, I did it because I love Girraween – the big granite rocks, the lyrebirds and wombats, the flowers and all the other inhabitants of this beaut place.” Extract From NPAQ article – Go Bill! One man make a difference.

His association with NPAQ began in 1947 when he would use his timber truck for carting people and their gear into the park from the train at Wallangarra. He also helped them with campsites and took them to interesting places to walk and climb, and to great wildflower areas in spring. He loved the walking and the friendships, whilst members learnt about the area from Bill.

Bill was a man who was completely connected to the landscape he called home. We will remember him fondly and will always be grateful for his efforts in protecting this special place, and for sharing his passion and knowledge. Girraween is a place that will forever hold the legacy of Bill Goebel.
