Social Walk – Daisy Hill

Getting to this walk was a challenge for some of the northsiders especially if my directions were followed. The local Council decided to do a major upgrade of Daisy Hill Road and completely shut off through traffic to Daisy Hill Conservation Park. After resorting to the UBD or calling up the GPS, an alternate route could be negotiated. A cheerful group of 11 members arrived and chatted over morning tea. The cloudy sky and the dappled light in the reserve were accompanied by a cool breeze. After completing the paperwork and the usual formalities, we set off on the Tree Discovery Trail and on to the Spotted Gum Trail; a distance of 5.5 kilometres. This is a multiuse park with horse riders, mountain bike riders, trail runners, walkers and apiary lots. No koalas were seen on our walk which was a disappointment for the photographers. After a leisurely picnic lunch over which everyone enjoyed a good chat, we visited the Daisy Hill Koala Centre which displayed three very sleepy koalas and a lone kookaburra. The Centre has a very interesting display with detailed information boards on the life cycle of koalas and the challenges they face in an urban environment. On the weekends this is a popular tourist attraction. After we had taken in the display, we made our separate ways to other activities. It was an enjoyable day in the bush with a very social group. Thanks everyone for making the leaders job so rewarding.
