Mt Hobwee Circuit 2021

Description: Escape the summer heat of Brisbane by taking a walk in the rainforest to the top of Mt Hobwee which, at 1164 metres, is the highest peak in Lamington National Park. While there are limited views from the top, there are a couple of lookouts on the way providing excellent views towards Mt Warning.

We’ll follow the Border Track from Binna Bur ra to Joalah Lookout for morning tea (approx 4.5km) before branching left (5.5km) for the circuitous climb to the top of Mt Hobwee, a good spot to soak up the ambience and enjoy lunch. Bring a light jacket as it is normally quite cool. Remnants of the old survey beacon might still be seen although it is slowly disintegrating.

After turning left on the way down, and enjoying the view from Dacelo Lookout, we’ll re-join the Border Track at the escarpment, turning right for the 8km trek back to Binna Burra and coffee.

Leaders Report: Coomera River Circuit 2021 in lieu of Mt Hobwee Circuit

Sunday, 8 February, 2021

Because the Mt Hobwee Circuit was still closed following storm damage in December, 2020, the group decided to walk the Coomera River Circuit.

In hot, humid conditions, seven walkers left Binna Burra, following the Border Track before turning right over the ridge to descend to the Coomera River Gorge below. The rainforest was vibrant from good. Summer rainfall although the same rains had left the track wetter and slipperier than normal requiring care with foot placement to avoid a fall. A break and morning tea were enjoyed at the Coomera Falls viewing platform which also gave the walkers time to soak in the vista including the gushing waterfalls and the Coomera Gorge stretching out into the distance,

Back on the track, the trek up the river began in earnest, crisscrossing the river via boulder bridges. A wide variety of fungi were noted, again testament to the good summer rains. Lunch was enjoyed to the symphony of running water at the last river crossing before the group rejoined the Border Track for the mainly downhill walk to Binna Burra for well-earned refreshments at the teahouse.
