Birdwatching report – Toorbul

10 members met at the designated site at 7.30am. High tide was not until 11am so all wader birds were scattered out on the exposed sandflats. We walked the nearby Beltana Ave to search for some bush birds. Arriving back at the vehicles we had an early morning tea and watched the waders being pushed in by the rising tide. Eventually large numbers of birds were gathering at the council constructed shorebird sanctuary. At the northern viewing area and were bewildered of the varieties and numbers of wader birds. Following lunch, we headed home stopping at Bishops Lagoon where a brolga and many other water birds were sighted.  61 birds were sighted at the two locations.

February outing will be to Toorbul to view the wader birds. High tide occurs around mid day and the water should drive the birds up onto the foreshore for excellent viewing. Adjacent roads through bushland also allow viewing of bush birds and many kangaroos.
