Somerset Trail, Mt Mee

In perfect weather conditions (cool, fine, sunny), thirteen walkers left the Gantry to disappear into lush rainforest. The rainforest soon gave way to tall timbers in the scribbly gum and drier, open forests. Little wonder this was once the home of a thriving logging industry, the area now protected by its National Park status. Morning tea was enjoyed at one of several lookouts providing magnificent views of the Brisbane River Valley. To the right, part of the Somerset Dam could be seen while, straight ahead, lay the headwaters of the Wivenhoe Dam. The group dallied to soak in the views and warmth of the sun before diving into the forest to complete the circuit back to the Gantry, a relic of the past timber industry. The walkers enjoyed lunch before departing the picnic grounds to meet up again a few kilometres down the road at the Pitstop Cafe to enjoy a well-earned coffee.
