The Respect Springbrook Mountain Coalition is an alliance of 15 environment and community groups that oppose a cableway over Springbrook National Park. We welcome the decision by Gold Coast City Council on 28 July 2026 to halt any further expenditure of ratepayer funds in investigating the routes of a cableway or more community consultation.

The coalition thanks Councillor Tozer for his advocacy for the protection of Springbrook National Park. The legal barriers that make a cableway unachievable, most notably the World Heritage and Commonwealth environmental protections covering any route to Springbrook, remain regardless of Council’s decision. The Queensland Tourism and Conservation Alliance (QTCA) is a non-partisan alliance of peak tourism and conservation bodies advocating for increased and strategic investment in Queensland’s protected area estate, with NPAQ’s CEO Chris Thomas as the current chair. QTCA supports the Queensland Government’s vision of a world-class protected area system and a thriving nature-based tourism sector. In February 2026, the QTCA submitted a considered proposal for the 2026–2027 State Budget that would provide for the necessary expansion of Queensland’s Protected Areas Estate, support increasing nature-based tourism and park visitation in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and provide world-class management for our protected areas.
