Birdwatching 2026-06-21 Warril Parkland, Larapinta, Brisbane

Report from 21/06/26

A mild winter’s day 14-15 degrees at starting time, with Noisy Friarbirds acknowledging our presence as we drove into the car park at Warril Parklands.  Noisy as they were, the Friarbirds were no where to be seen.  Our group of 6 meandered through the interesting nature-play ground and proceeded to  the Possum Forest Trail overlooking Oxley Creek.  Silver Eyes were in abundance with the Scarlet Myzomela competing for attention.  Where the finger of Oxley Creek protrudes towards the Possum Forest Trail, dozens of small birds were flitting around delighted with the light, bright morning.  Back to the Trailhead past the Picnic Area, we made our way along the Sea Eagle Lake Trail to the Viewing Platform.  At this point the Lake was clear and free of weed.  This was not the case is all sections of Oxley Creek that we had passed.  We gathered at the Picnic Area by Buddha-budela Lake to complete the Bird Checklist which appears below.

Warril Parklands is part of the Oxley Creek beautification upgrade.  There is 84 hectares of bushland and this area is part of the largest remaining continuous stretch of open eucalyptus forest in South East Queensland.  We won’t be traversing the 84 hectares but will walk along a small loop heading west along Oxley Creek through tall open forest.

Parking:  UBD Map 239 F12.  As you enter the park, please park in the top section (opposite Budela-budela Lake). 

Meet:  1059 Paradise Road, Larapinta, Brisbane.  We will start the walk from the car park. and meander through the interesting kids playground and onto  the Sea Eagle Lake Trail.   We’ll explore some other trails before returning for morning tea to the beautiful Budela-budela Lake Viewing Area.

Bring:  Hat, sunglasses, sunburn cream, personal first aid kit, enclosed shoes, binoculars, chair, insect repellent and  morning tea .
