Jolly’s Lookout to Boombana and Return

Activity Report

Six members registered for this walk.  As the traffic was horrendous in Brisbane this morning, there was a delay in starting the walk.  We waited at the carpark below Jollys Lookout for some of the walkers to arrive.  It was decided to head off with one walker offering to catch up with the rest of the group.  The Thylogale Walking Track passes through open forest with rainforest sections.  The NPAQ Revegetation Group have put in a big effort along this track to remove lantana and other introduced weeds.  We made good time to reach the Boombana picnic area for morning tea.  As we were about to leave our sixth walker arrived.  The Boombana picnic area has been recently redeveloped and more car parking spaces provided but the toilet block and picnic shelter have been removed.  We debated the advantages and disadvantages with the new facilities.

Our walk back to the cars at the parking area below Jollys Lookout was interspersed with frequent stops to chat about several worldly issues.  Arriving at the cars we decided to drive up to Jollys Lookout to have our lunch.  Extensive views were on show from the lookout.  Although it had been overcast all morning, no rain fell on our walk.  After a very social morning, we made our way back to Brisbane as several walkers had activities planned for the afternoon.

We are fortunate to have such wonderful tracts of forest close to Brisbane.  Thanks everyone for your company and thoughtful conservation.

Activity Details

This walk is in the South D’Aguilar Section of D’Aguilar National Park and is only a short distance from the edge of Brisbane’s suburbia. We will walk from Jolly’s Lookout along the Thylogale Walking Track to Boombana and return, a distance of 8 kilometres.  As the track passes through most of the major forest types of the Park, an observer should see a variety of birds – Whip bird, Wompoo fruit dove, Australian king parrot, Australian log runner, Yellow tailed black cockatoo, Green catbird and Large billed scrub wren.  We can visit the large fig tree and boardwalk at Boombana.  Unfortunately, with the redevelopment of the Boombana Picnic Area, there are no picnic facilities or toilets there now.  The Egernia Circuit was closed for track maintenance when this walk was listed.  We will have a late lunch overlooking the Brisbane panorama from Jolly’s Lookout. There will be time for coffee at Mount Nebo if that is on your mind.

We will meet at 9:15am at Jollys Lookout Picnic Area (D’Aguilar National Park), 1749 Mount Nebo Road, Mount Nebo.  UBD Map 135 reference M1.  GPS coordinates  -27.4003S   152.8057E

Bring morning tea to have on the walk, bottle of water, sun screen and hat.  Also bring a picnic lunch and folding chair for after the walk.
