Birdwatching Report
14 participants – 8 members & 6 non members
A family of Apostlebirds greeted us as we drove into the carpark at the Bushland Reserve on Hawkesbury Road, Anstead, on a fine, mild, winters morning. 8 members and 6 non members set off along the track running parallel and closest to Hawkesbury Road. Before crossing the cute rock bridge, we marvelled at a black-shouldered kite sunning itself on a tall branch of a eucalyptus tree. We carried on to a bitumen track along which the vegetation provided shelter and food for red backed fairywrens, Lewin’s Honeyeaters, Rufous and Golden Whistlers and Eastern Yellow Robins. Many red-browed finches were seen feeding on the ground both along the bitumen and close by the Quarry Lookout. Turning at the tank, we headed up to the Quarry Lookout then home.
The following birds were observed. Australian Brushturkey x 1, Black-shouldered Kite x 1, Laughing Kookaburra x 2, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo x 10, Variegated Fairywren x 2, Red-backed Fairywren x 2, Noisy Friarbird x 1, Blue-faced Honeyeater x 2 (1 adult and 1 immature) Noisy Miner x 9, Lewin’s Honeyeater x 2, Spotted Pardalote – heard, White-browed Scrubwren x 17, Eastern Whipbird – heard, Grey Butcherbird – heard, Pied Butcherbird – heard, Australian Magpie x 8, Pied Currawong x 2, Black-faced Cuckooshrike x 2 (1 x juvenile) Varied Triller x 1, Golden Whistler x 5 (2 female & 3 males), Rufous Whistler x 2, Grey Shrikethrush x 2, Australasian Figbird x 6, Olive-backed Oriole x 2, Willie Wagtail x 1, Grey Fantail x 15, Magpie-Lark x 2, Torresian Crow x 3, Apostlebird x 6, Eastern Yellow Robin x 3, Silvereye x 1, Common Myna x 2, Red-browed finch x 25, Rainbow Lorikeet x 15
