EASTER CAMP – GIRRAWEEN 2021

Easter Camp Report

Fortunately, on Easter Thursday the COVID lockdown was lifted and people started heading for Girraween. Sadly, where we previously camped the ground was too wet and vehicles lost traction and a new area was selected to camp. More people arrived on Friday and we had a total of 19 campers. A strong southeast wind blew with occasional rain scuds for the four days making it a little uncomfortable at times. Walks were carefully selected due to possible slips on wet rocks.

On Saturday, the walkers walked to The Junction and noted the height of the recent flooding of Bald Rock Creek and after lunch in the day use area decided to round off the day with a walk to Dr Robert’s Waterhole and the Underground Creek.  On Monday the walk was to Sphinx Rock, Turtle Rock and a climb of Castle Rock.  Considering the misty weather we were lucky to complete these walks without putting on our wet weather gear – pleasant walking.

Car drives also were arranged to view the now full Storm King Dam, the Stanthorpe town lookout, and Nundubbermere Falls with the Severn River flowing strongly. A morning tea was enjoyed at the historic Wallangarra Railway Station. There were locations some people had never visited. Saturday night’s dinner was cooked using Jemma, and Neil Huckenswager’s cooking trailer, and the meal eaten under Yvonne Parson’s new large gazebo. Thank you to all three. Everybody had a substantial meal of sausages, onions, and coleslaw, plus their salad. This was followed by mud cake, cream, and a cherry. By this time few people backed up for seconds. Mary Anne Ryan supplied quizzes for nighttime brain testing. Each evening we enjoyed Happy Hour but not sharing our nibbles. The wind and weather only allowed one night with the central campfire.

Special thanks to Laurelle and Len Lowry, without them, the camp would not have been the success that it was. Thanks also to Mary Anne Ryan for conducting Sunday’s Easter service. Thanks to the walk leaders Mary Anne, Frank Freeman, Laurelle and Len Lowry, and Ron Owen.

If the COVID virus is contained, we are planning the 2021 Easter Camp for NPAQ Financial Members only
