The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a magnificent marine mammal. Despite its awe-inspiring size, it frequently engages in acrobatic displays, such as breaching, spy-hopping and flipper slapping. Humpbacks are also renowned for their songs and their complex social behaviour. These gentle giants make long migrations along the Queensland coast, covering thousands of kilometres each year. With their distinctive hump and long pectoral fins, they are easily recognisable.
Despite being hunted to the brink of extinction in the early 20th century, conservation efforts have led to the recovery of humpback whale populations in many regions. IUCN status: Least Concern
