Turtles are some of the most enduring reptiles on the planet – predating even crocodiles – with turtle fossils from more than 200 million years ago having been found. The shell of a turtle is actually part of its skeleton, growing as the turtle ages. Sadly, all six species of marine turtle found in Australia are now endangered. One of the major threats that marine turtles face is pollution of the ocean. They risk entanglement in fishing line, or abandoned nets or crab pots, and are known to die from consuming plastic bags, which resemble their favourite food – jellyfish.
IUCN status: Endangered
