15 participants – 6 members & 9 non members – attended the Birdwalk on a glorious mid winter morning.  The Brisbane City Council were completing work on the shared track so a section of the path was fenced off and the surrounding area unable to be accessed.  The new path around the lagoon is wider than the old so it should be safer when bikers, walkers and  walkers with dogs share the cement path.

The following birds were observed during the morning. Magpie Goose x 51, Wandering Whistling Duck x 10, Maned Duck x 45, Pacific Black Duck x 21, Australian Grebe x 1, Australian White Ibis x 4, Great Egret x 5, Little Pied Cormorant x 1, Little Black Cormorant x 10, Australian Darter x 10, Australasian Swamphen x 6, Dusky Moorhen x 6, Comb-crested Jacana x 1, Masked Lapwing x 4, Rock Dove x 20, Short billed Corella (Little Corella) x 4, Rainbow Lorikeet x 61, Scaly breasted Lorikeet x 20, Variegated Fairywren x 6 (all female), Scarlet Myzomela x heard, Brown Honeyeater x 4, Little Friarbird x 1, Blue faced Honeyeater x 1, Yellow faced Honeyeater x 2, Noisy Miner x 14, Lewin’s Honeyeater x 2, Striated Pardalote x 4, White breasted Woodswallow x 1,Grey Butcherbird x 1, Pied Butcherbird x 1, Australian Magpie 6, Pied Currawong x 2, Black faced Cuckooshrike x 2, Rufous Whistler x 1 (female), Willie Wagtail x 5, Grey Fantail x 3, Magpie Lark x 6, TorresianC x 6, Tawny grass bird x 1, Red browed finch x 1,

Minnippi Parklands has extensive meadows with a looped hiking trail around a lagoon and a birdwatching deck.

Directions:  Travelling east on Wynnum Road, 1.9km past Creek Road and before the gateway Motorway Bridge, turn right into Greystone Road.  If exiting from the Gateway Motorway at Exit 100, turn west toward the city onto Wynnum Road, 180 metres from the Motorway Bridge on your left is Greystone Road, Tingalpa.  (UBD map 162 B13).  Follow Greystone Road, which becomes Stanton Road for 1.3km to Porter’s Paddock car park.  Drive to the end of the road, which is a carpark.  (162 B16).

Bring:  hat, sunburn cream, insect repellent, binoculars, personal first aid kit, enclosed shoes and morning tea.
