Birdwatching 2026-05-24 Dowse Lagoon, Sandgate
Report from 2026-05-24
8 participants met at the car park on Brighton Road and proceeded to circumnavigate the lagoon in a leisurely fashion. Following morning tea the bird count was completed and the following birds were observed:
Wandering Whistling Duck x 24; Black Swan x 3; Maned Duck x 4; Pacific Black Duck x 30, Grey Teal x 4; Australian Brushturkey x 8; Australasian Grebe x 8; Australian White Ibis x 5; Royal Spoonbill x 1; Intermediate Egret x 2; Little Egret x 1; Australian Pelican x 1; Little Pied Cormorant x 5, Little Black Cormorant x 7; Great Cormorant x 2; Australasian Darter x 5; Australasian Swamphen x 25; Dusky Moorhen x 12; Eurasian Coot x 45; Comb-crested Jacana x 3; Rock Dove x 3; Spotted Dove x 1; Tawny Frogmouth x 2; Sacred Kingfisher x 1; Rainbow Bee-eater x 6; Galah x 4; Little Corella x 7; Sulphur-crested Cockatoo x 3; Rainbow Lorikeet x 49; Scaly-breasted Lorikeet x 28, Blue-faced Honeyeater x 1; Noisy Miner x 31; Striated Pardalote x heard; Pied Butcherbird x 2; Grey Butcherbird x 5; Australian Magpie x7, Pied Currawong x 2; Black-faced Cuckooshrike x 1; Australasian Figbird x 4; Willie Wagtail x 2; Grey Fantail x 1; Magpie-lark x 3; Torresian crow x 6; Welcome Swallow x 3

Dowse Lagoon is a small freshwater lagoon in the heart of the suburban area of Sandgate. There is a paved path approximately 1.4km featuring several viewing decks around what was earlier known as Sandgate’s Second Lagoon.
Dowse Lagoon was named in 1975 after Thomas Dowse, an English convict, merchant and Town Clerk of Brisbane.
Dowse Lagoon was nominated as a Ramsar site in 1993.
There are public toilets by the Dowse Lagoon car parking area.

Bring: Hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, enclosed shoes, binoculars, chair, morning tea and personal first aid kit.
