Box Forest Circuit, Lamington National Park – Day Walk

Description: One of the more picturesque tracks in Lamington National Park, the Box Forest Circuit passes through a section of the rainforest where giant Brush Box (Lophostemon confertus) Trees predominate. Similar brush box in other parts of the World Heritage Area have been radiocarbon-dated at over 1500 years. We’ll see some magnificent specimens as we wend our way down the steepish track to West Canungra Creek. There are also examples of Antarctic Beech Trees, another ancient tree in this area of Lamington.

As we wander upstream along West Canungra Creek, we’ll pass a number of waterfalls including the rather special Box Log Falls and Elabana Falls, good spots to stop a while to enjoy the ambience as well as refreshments.

After crossing Picnic Rock (above Elabana Falls), the track ascends steadily to the Border Track before descending back to O’Reilly’s for coffee before heading home.

While the walk is on track, there are a number of creek crossings (expect to get your feet wet) and extended, moderate ascents. Expect rough surfaces with protruding rocks and roots as well as steep drop-offs to the side. Walking boots are recommended.

Please do not attend this activity if you are feeling unwell.

NPAQ Activity Report

Box Forest Circuit – Day Walk

On a clear, autumn morning, the seven walkers left O’Reilly’s along the Border Track to complete the Box Forest Circuit. Just after leaving the Border Track, the first obstacle was reached. The roots of a fallen tree had left a deep hole in the track, the first of several similar obstacles slowing progress.

The track itself was generally in good condition, firm and fairly clear of the loose leaf litter experienced only a couple of months before. The leaves had decayed and been trampled into the ground leaving a firm surface.

Unfortunately, that surface is becoming more uneven as recent flooding rains have exposed more rocks and roots making for slower progress to avoid trips and falls and possible injury.

Generally, creek crossings were fairly easy although care and good balance was needed to avoid getting one’s feet wet.

Box Log and Elabana Falls were highlights of the walk while the giant box trees were awesome. The morning sunlight gave depth and colour to the views across the valley.

A great walk was enjoyed by all, finishing with refreshments at O’Reilly’s before the drive home.
