Lake Baroon to Kondalilla Falls – Rescheduled

Activity Report

This walk was programmed for Saturday 13 August but due the weather report predicting rain and possible lightning, the walk was rescheduled for Sunday 14 August.  Unfortunately, four registrants were unable to walk on the Sunday.

Sunday was a perfect day with clear blue skies.  A car shuffle was organised and after a short morning tea, 12 walkers set off on what is the start of the Sunshine Coast Great Walk from the Lake Baroon carpark.  The rainforest understory was lush and green from all the recent rain.  The downside meant that the track was eroded and muddy in places.  We took the diversion to the Obi Obi Creek for the view up the creek to the dam wall.  We were unable to go to the Narrows Lookout due to a large tree fall.  Baroon Lookout presented a clear view towards the dam and down the Obi Obi Gorge.  Lunch was enjoyed at Little Obi Hump.  There was a short stop at Flat Rock and a photo opportunity of a medium size Lace Monitor on the track.

At the junction of the Kondalilla Falls Circuit, some of the group went directly back to the Rock Pool while the rest of the walkers went via the Kondalilla Falls Lookout and on to the Rock Pools.  We watched a Green Tree Snake moving around the Rock Pools.  The walk back to the picnic grounds and the carpark was enjoyed on an excellent track.  All walkers were transported back to the Lake Baroon carpark from where we made our own way home.

A very enjoyable walk with a very sociable group.  Thanks everyone for your company.

Activity Details

This walk has been rescheduled to the following day – Sunday 14 August 2022 due to rain predicted on the Saturday.   The start of the walk is at the southern entrance to the Sunshine Coast Great Walk and this section follows the Obi Obi Creek gorge.  We will meet in the carpark off Narrows Road, North Maleny where we will organise a car shuffle as this walk is a one-way walk.  We will walk through lush subtropical rainforest and open eucalypt forest with several interesting features along the way.  Kondalilla  National Park is located in the scenic Blackall Range which was created by volcanoes and sculptured by water over millions of years.  We will drop into Obi Obi Creek, stop at the Narrows Lookout and Baroon Dam Lookout, lunch at Little Obi Hump before having a break at Flat Rock and Kondalilla Falls Lookout to finish at the Kondalilla Falls Picnic Ground.  The walk is about 12 kilometres and we will allow 5 hours to do the short side tracks and the through walk.  We will retrieve our cars from the start of the walk before organising a coffee.
