We are Queensland’s oldest non-governmental environmental organisation. For over 94 years NPAQ’s advocacy for Queensland’s protected areas has been driven by science, professional expertise, impartial scrutiny and trusted relationships.
What we do
We promote the establishment, effective management and presentation of national parks in Queensland.
Established in 1930, NPAQ has played a pivotal role in the creation of many national parks in Queensland. We bring together people who share an appreciation for protected areas and the vital role they play in conserving our unique and splendid natural environment.
Our core functions include advocacy, outdoor recreation activities, conservation activities, education and research. NPAQ is an independent, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation, and is the longest running National Park Association in Australia.
Our current work includes the following priorities:
-
Adequate funding for the Queensland Protected Area Strategy
-
Influencing government’s position on ecotourism
-
Listing of national parks as a Matter of National Environmental Significance, under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999
-
Declaration of Yabba Links National Park (~20,000 ha)
-
Recovery resourcing for post-fire weed and pest management
-
Transition of native state forests under the South East Queensland Forestry Agreement
NPAQ is a member of the National Parks Australia Council (NPAC) which has a mission to protect, promote and extend national parks systems across Australia.
NPAC was formed in 1975 as a united voice supporting the National Reserve System and representing the views of a range of state and territory non-government organisations concerned with protecting the natural environment and national parks.
