NOVEMBER 2025 PARK OF THE MONTH

NUDGEE BEACH, MORETON BAY MARINE PARK

Stretching along the south-eastern Queensland coast, Moreton Bay Marine Park protects 3400 km2 of estuarine and marine waterways inset with magnificent sand islands. This blue haven bordering the Bay’s green is one Queensland’s most important wetland and marine environments. Fringed with mangroves and shallow tidal inlets, it supports fish, prawn and crab nurseries, and its vegetation and tidal mudflats host some 32 species of migratory shorebirds, including the critically endangered far eastern curlew. Beneath its waters, lush meadows of seagrass – an underwater flowering plant most closely related to lilies and orchids – provide nourishment for the endangered dugong, or sea cow. Its blue waters are home to humpback whales, bottlenose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, and 6 of the world’s seven species of endangered sea turtles, as well as an abundance of colourful fish and marine invertebrates. Nudgee Beach is a serene coastal site perfect for birdwatchers and marine enthusiasts to while away a morning surrounded by the majesty of Moreton Bay. Join us there on Saturday 29 November for Park of the Month or learn more about Moreton Bay Marine Park.
