Thanks to everyone who attended our September Park of the Month at Bribie Island National Park! From wildflower spotting to birdwatching and nature journaling, it was a fantastic day out in nature. Watch for our next Park of the Month – 31 October at Bunya Mountains National Park – to go live in early October.
Discover. Connect. Protect. Enjoy
Park of the Month is a key initiative of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) and NPAQ’s Parks Connect program. We’re passionate about parks, and by sharing decades of knowledge from committed volunteers, conservationists and National Park Rangers with local communities and visitors, we hope Queenslanders from all walks of life will fall in love with our amazing wild places.
PARK OF THE MONTH
Bribie Island National Park
We had an amazing time at our Park of the Month on 19 September!
Beautiful Bribie Island National Park is a wilderness of sand dunes, heath, paperbark wetlands, open forests, woodlands, freshwater creeks and lagoons just 65 km north of Brisbane.
The National Park covers about one-third of Bribie Island and protects ecosystems now largely lost on the mainland, especially the remarkable wallum heathlands and swamplands, which burst with vivid wildflower blooms in spring!
First Nations cultural heritage, including shell middens and sites evidencing thousands of years of Traditional custodianship, are found throughout the island and safeguarded within the National Park.
The tidal wetlands and waters of Bribie Island and Pumicestone Passage are protected within Moreton Bay Marine Park, a nursery for fish and crustaceans and a sanctuary for endangered dugong, which feed on seagrass here. The northern section is also part of the Moreton Bay Ramsar site. Sandbars there are vital roosting and feeding sites for resident and migratory shorebirds, and marine turtles nest on the ocean beaches.
Check out what we got up to at our Bribie Island NP Park of the Month on Saturday 19 September! We would also like to say a massive thank you to Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association for all their help and support on the day.
SAVE THE DATE of Saturday 31 October for our next Park of the Month!
In October, we’ll be heading to Bunya Mountains National Park.
