Following the rain through the week and with all the foot traffic on the Aracaria Track around Enoggera Dam, the track surface was well churned up from the walkers, runners and birdwatchers. Despite this, we enjoyed the ramble and especially loved to see the many scarlet honeyeaters flitting purposefully through the trees showing off their full plumage. The sun was shining with just a few clouds in the sky. 20 different species birds seen and 9 heard including: Pacific Black Duck x 18, Hardhead x 10, Australian Brushturkey x 5, Australian Grebe x 5, Whistling Kite x 1, Australasian Swamphen x 3, Dusky Moorhen x 2, Eurasian Coot x 11, Fan-tailed Cuckoo – (H=heard), Laughing Kookaburra x 1, Forest Kingfisher x 3, Supra-crested Cockatoo x 8, Rainbow Lorikeet (H), Australian King Parrot x 2, Scarlet Myzomela (Honeyeater) x 9, Brown Honeyeater (H), Blue-faced Honeyeater x 4, Yellow Honeyeater (H), Bell Miner (many H), Noisy Miner x 8, Lewin’s Honeyeater (H), Eastern Whipbird (Male & female H), Pied Butcherbird (H), Grey Butcherbird x 1, Pied Currawong (H), Australian Magpie x 1, Rufous shrike thrush x 1, Grey Fantail x 2, Torresian Crow x 1
Enoggera Reservoir was the oldest water storage and first major dam built in Brisbane in 1866 storing water for Brisbane’s growing population. It is not currently used as a drinking water source but a variety of water sports including kayaking, stand up paddling, canoeing, and fishing are promoted on and around the dam. A number of walking tracks surround the dam and we will follow the Aracaria Track which passes close to the waters edge. Some gentle hills and steps form part of this track.
