Birdwatching – 2017 – Oxley Creek Common – 21st May

This well maintained level park is situated between the suburb of Sherwood and the Rocklea Markets and the entrance is well signposted from Sherwood Road. The area has the mangrove lined Oxley Creek, woodlands, open grass paddocks and two lagoons with substantial waterbird populations. This is a very popular birdwatching location.

Oxley Creek Common always provides an interesting morning for our bird walks. Sixteen members set off on this beautiful morning along the flat pathways to observe what the park offers. We walked through young flowering trees parallel with Oxley Creek on one side and open grass paddocks on the other. This gave an interesting viewing of a variety of bird habitats. Next we walked through open grass paddocks to a lagoon where a variety of water birds fossicked for food along the banks and flats. Pig foot prints were observed across the track. Hundreds of new plants and trees have recently been planted in open areas to add to previous plantings over many years. We all returned for morning tea, some folks left for prior commitments while others stayed to enjoy lunch and a lovely social time. 43 birds sighted and 4 birds heard.
