Social Walk – Explore Maiala Section

The weather report for this walk was not promising with a forecast of patchy fog, chance of showers and patchy rain with a late morning thunderstorm. The weather did not discourage a dedicated group of walkers from reporting to the Maiala Section picnic area. After a quick morning tea, we set off on the 4.3 kilometre Greens Falls circuit track. The rainforest was lush and green after recent rain but it still showed evidence of wind damage with numerous tree-falls. The track and extensive boardwalks were all in great condition and before long we were at the top of Greens Falls. It is unfortunate that a view of the face of the falls cannot be seen from the viewing platform. On the walk, it was interesting to hear favourable comments from a couple from Chicago USA who were enthusiastic about Brisbane’s close proximity to great beaches and extensive forest reserves. On completing the circuit, via the Cypress Grove track, we “compared notes” with two rangers doing a site inspection of the picnic area. After lunch in a shelter shed, we decided to walk the short 1.2 kilometre track to the viewing point at the Western Window and return. Mount Walker was visible on the horizon. A coffee break at the Mount Glorious coffee shop was ordered and while we were sipping our lattes, the skies opened and the rain came down. The leaders thank everyone for their company and ordering a fine day’s walking.
