Estuarine (sometimes called saltwater) crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) are the world’s largest reptile species and among the planet’s top predators. Superbly adapted to their environment, crocodiles have been around since dinosaur days. These ferocious reptilians inhabit the Queensland coast north of Gladstone and the Top End and Kimberley of the NT and WA. They can grow to 6.5m and weigh more than 1000kg, spending most of their 70 years in the water, although they come ashore to nest and to warm up by basking in the sun.
