Platypuses are one of just five living monotremes species. When the platypus first came to European attention, English museum curators thought it was a hoax and that someone had sewn together parts of different animals.
Platypuses hunt in riverbeds and streams, using electroreceptors in their bills to find yabbies or other small water invertebrates.
