Featuring on Australia’s coat of arms alongside the kangaroo, the emu is a widespread bird species with some 725,000 individuals in the wild. Emus can live to about 10 years old and can run up to 50km/h. They feed predominantly on fruits, seeds, flowers, insects and small reptiles and are a critical seed dispersal animal of the Australian bush. When breeding, the female lays the eggs and leaves the male to incubate the eggs and raise the chicks, which will stay with him for around two years. IUCN status: Stable
