Australia’s platypus is one of just 5 species of monotreme still alive. When they were first discovered, museum curators at first believed them to be a hoax, thinking someone had sewn parts of different animals together. Playpusses hunt in river beds, using electroreceptors in their beaks to find yabbies and fish (sharks find their prey in a similar way). IUCN status: Near Threatened
