The rainbow lorikeet is just one of Australia’s extremely colourful small parrot species. With a blue head and belly, green wings, red-orange chest and a red beak, it is among the most vivid and commonly seen lorikeets in Queensland. At dusk in eastern and northern Australia, hundreds of birds congregate at their favourite roosting place, usually in a large eucalypt or gum tree. Unlike most birds, lorikeets do not eat seeds. Instead, they use their brush-tipped tongues to lick the nectar and pollen off native flowers. IUCN Status: Decreasing
