The rainbow lorikeet is just one of the many colourful Australian birds with a blue head and belly, green wings, orange/yellow chest and red beak. At dusk in eastern and northern Australia, masses of hundreds of birds will gather at their favourite roosting place for the night, which is usually a large eucalyptus tree. Unlink most birds, lorikeets don’t eat seeds and instead lick the nectar and pollen off native flowers using their furry tongue.
