Discover. Connect. Protect. Enjoy.

Park of the Month is a key initiative of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) and NPAQ’s Parks Connect program.

We’re passionate about parks, and by sharing decades of knowledge from committed volunteers, conservationists and National Park Rangers with local communities and visitors, we hope Queenslanders from all walks of life will fall in love with our amazing wild places.

JULY 2025 PARK OF THE MONTH IS …

Glass House Mountains National Park

For tens of thousands of years, the Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) and Jinibara people have revered the peaks within Glass House Mountains National Park and thrived on their surrounding rich volcanic soils.

These majestic peaks that puncture the skyline of the Sunshine Coast hinterland all have Indigenous names, such as Mounts Tibrogargan, Ngungun, Beerburrum and Coonowrin. Their formation also led Lt. James Cook to name them the Glass House Mountains—after the shape of lime-burning kilns in his native Yorkshire—when he sailed down the coast in 1770.

Check out the awesome activities visitors enjoyed at our July Park of the Month Open Day.

QPWS Ranger Donna Haslam explained the importance of fire management and the challenge of fighting off a Phytophora outbreak in the National Park.

Paul Donatiu from Queensland Threatened Plant Network led two insightful ‘wanders’ along the goat track to explore Queensland’s wildflowers and learn more about threatened flora recovery, restoration ecology, and how native plants deal with change.

We all took a moment to breathe, “bathe” in the forest and use all of our senses and our gratitude to connect with Beerburrum forest on this grounding immersive experience hosted by Jay Ridgewell from Held Outside Nature Connection Experiences. Don’t miss the longer, more intimate session on 30 July. BOOK ONLINE HERE.

Volunteer Ranger Dan Watts explained how to plan and prepare for a bushwalking adventure, including route planning, navigation, what to pack, and what to do if things don’t go to plan, along with a short hike to practise some navigation skills.

Our Cadet Rangers took a Wildflower Walk with Paul Donatui and learnt how certain trees were used to make soap or stun fish, as well as plenty about wildflowers and the threats to native flora.

Mooloolah River Landcare inspired much creativity with clay and seedpod art in this fun drop-in activity suitable for all ages and abilities.

Kids spent some time colouring and exploring a range of fabulous new ProtectED learning materials from QPWS as well as some hands-on nature learning and a little nature library.

Our selfie frame was a big hit, so make sure you ‘snap and share’ at our next Park of the Month event on 9 August at Bunyaville Conservation Park. Here’s our CEO Chris Thomas getting in the right ‘frame’ of mind for a fun day in nature.

Parks Connect is seeking presenters, partners and sponsors to help our Park of the Month programs connect even more people to nature. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, eNGO or conservation group, business or enthusiast who’d love to be involved, please submit an expression of interest.

Parks Connect is proudly supported through funding from the Queensland Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
