The southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) is a species of large, powerful flightless ratite that uses its powerful legs and a hard, horn-like casque on its head to navigate through vegetation in search of food. Australia’s heaviest birds, they are found only in the Wet Tropics and Cape York in rainforests, melaleuca swamps, mangrove forests and even on beaches. Cassowaries are a keystone species, playing a vital role in maintaining the environment in northern Australia by dispersing the seeds of rainforest fruit.
