Koalas (Phascolarctus cinereus) inhabit the dry eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia and can grow up to 85cm long. Their closest living relatives are wombats, although their lifestyles are very different, with koalas being almost wholly arboreal and rarely venturing down to the ground. Although the koala is arguably Australia’s most iconic marsupial, almost 80% of their natural habitat has been lost due to development or bushfires, making these slow-moving fluffballs endangered nationally.
Status: Endangered nationally
