Three species of wombat inhabit Australia: the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus), the critically endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) and the southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons), which is listed as near threatened on the IUCN Red List.
