The kookaburra is one of Australia’s most iconic birds, and its raucous laughing call, sometimes called the “bush alarm clock” is familiar to all Australians.
Kookaburras and kingfishers are closely related and share the same family; however, kookaburras are less commonly seen near water than kingfishers are. All species of kookaburra found in Australia are carnivorous, hunting snakes, insects, frogs and other small animals – even goldfish from the garden pond!
