Lindeman – we won!

We’re pleased to start the year off with some good news!

As the result of hard work and persistence by NPAQ and others with regard to the proposed revocation of national park land on Lindeman Island to a private developer, the government has announced “The proponent…no longer proposes new development on National Park” (Hon. Cameron Dick, Minister for State Development, Press Release 20 December 2017).

As you may recall, 36.9ha of national park land was under threat of revocation for commercial development. This land will now remain part of our treasured national park estate. Thank you to those who have already donated to our annual appeal. We are delighted to share the good news produced from your generous contributions.

If you are yet to donate, please consider doing so, as there is still much work to be done. There are many more similar proposals coming for commercial developments inside of national parks. Brett Godfrey, appointed in September by the State Government as head of Tourism and Events Queensland, wants to open national parks to increased tourism, including accommodation inside of parks (as reported in the Courier Mail 23 December 2017). He will be meeting with Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch early this year to discuss ways to bring more tourism opportunities to national parks.

As defenders of parks, NPAQ will continue to fight to ensure all proposals keep conservation at the heart of national parks. As a not-for-profit organisation, only with your financial assistance can we continue our work protecting our national parks. Please make a donation to support our work protecting Queensland unique natural spaces.
