‘Nature builds resilience. For people and planet.’
Our friends at Binna Burra Lodge certainly know a thing or two about resilience, which is why that message is inscribed on Binna Burra’s new “Resilience Rock”!
Since its founding in 1933 during the Great Depression, resilience has been part of Binna Burra’s cultural legacy, and more than ever since the catastrophic 2019 bushfire destroyed the original Binna Burra Lodge.
On 28 September, NPAQ’s current Patron and Queensland’s 27th Governor—Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeanette Young AC PSM—officially dedicated the Binna Burra Resilience Rock on a cornerstone outside the site of the new Lodge on Mt Roberts, due to open in November. One of several hefty rocks turned up during the construction of the new lodge, the Resilience Rock is a poignant addition to the new Binna Burra Cultural landscape.

The Governor stated that, ‘It honours the memory of visionaries Romeo Lahey and Arthur Groom who worked so passionately to establish the National Parks Association of Queensland, and whose drive to maintain the cultural heritage of Lamington National Park also led to the development of Binna Burra Lodge—a unique and cherished social business that was born from the deprivations of the Great Depression’, also calling it a ‘tangible reminder that Binna Burra is built on foundations that are reinforced by the compassionate spirit of all those who have loved it’.
The Governor’s dedication and address continue a long history of connection between the Governors of Queensland and Woonoongoora, Lamington National Park—a rock-solid relationship that NPAQ also shares, both with our sister organisation Binna Burra Lodge and our Patron, the Governor of Queensland. We congratulate Binna Burra on this much-deserved new beginning, and we thank our Governor and Patron for her kind words and her commitment to governing Queensland over the past five years.
